Self-Shadowing Prey was inspired by the late writings of the French-Romanian surrealist Ghérasim Luca and uses two poem recitations by him as base material. Their titles are “Ma Déraison D’être / My Reason For Being” and “Le Tangage De Ma Langue / The Pitching of My Tongue”.

Pitch and rhythm values were extracted from audio recordings of Luca reciting and used as the basis for a score with the aid of computer-assisted orchestration by IRCAM. The second half of the piece saw his voice processed and manipulated as concrete material.

The title of the piece Self-Shadowing Prey came from a book of his poems I was gifted. They are engrossing and hermetically sealed on the page, but elevated in their musicality from the few recordings of him reciting them.
A magnetic and loquacious flow of sibilance and jarring rhythmic intervals, words untethered and oddly humorous.
